Manal AlMaimouni
Manal modernizes weaving techniques to blend traditional narratives with contemporary utility, reinvigorating Bedouin Tribes' weaving in modern society. She recognizes the sociological significance of weaving, where Khaleeji women translate oral storytelling into abstract expressions, documenting the female perspective on beauty, identity, and the environment.
This is an ongoing exploratory project examining Sadu not as a static heritage form but as a technique, language, and medium for expression. I'm looking to dissect Sadu’s structures—its weave, symbols, rhythms, and repetitions—to understand how meaning, memory, and observation are embedded through making.
The first iterations reflect on Bedouin women’s weaving practices, where Sadu functioned as a way of translating environment, emotion, and lived experience into pattern—positioning the loom as both a practical and expressive tool. From this foundation, the work expands toward large-scale, experiential installations that treat the loom as a spatial device, allowing Sadu to be inhabited, navigated, and experienced physically.
Execution is supported by Manal AlMaimouni, whose knowledge of traditional weaving techniques informs the material and technical development. Rather than centering a singular narrative, the work positions Sadu as an evolving system—one that shifts across scale, context, and time, and continues to operate as a form of expression shaped by cultural continuity and change
